Villafranca del Bierzo - Laguna

Length: 25,5 Kilometres

The 25,5 kilometres between Villafranca del Bierzo and La Laguna de Castilla are the last to be covered by the pilgrim in the Province of León. We leave Villafranca through the street calle del Agua and reach the bridge over the river Burbia.

The pilgrim can chose between two alternative routes that will take our traveller up to Trabadelo after 9,5 km:

  • Following in parallel to the river Valcarce’s course through the A-road Nacional VI. There is an intense traffic in this road and the pilgrim may feel uncomfortable. After 5 km the traveller will cross Pereje and 4,5 km later, Trabadelo.
  • The alternative route starts also from the bridge over the Burbia, in Villafranca del Bierzo. This option is more tiring for the pilgrim, although it becomes less dangerous and allows to remain in contact with nature. After some 4 km the traveller reaches Pradela and, another km further on, Trabadelo, until the A-road Nacional VI. From there on, there are 4 km until

La Pórtela de Valcarce, one more to Ambas Mestas and yet one to Vega de Valcarce, where the pilgrim will find a river beach to rest and refresh.

An effort of another 4 km takes us to Herrerías, through Ruitelán. The main feature of this stage is that the pilgrim must advance by climbing. The traveller approaches to the summit of El Cebreiro (1.293 metres), already in Galicia.

From Herrerías, the climbing turns sharper. After 4 km, the traveller reaches La Faba and a last stretch of 2 km takes us to the end of the last stage of the pilgrimage to Santiago in the Province of León. The last leonese village is La Laguna de Castilla. Santiago is now closer, 153 kilometres away.

After more than 200 km through the leonese landscape, the traveller will have crossed the largest route’s province of Spain in terms of the pilgrimage to Santiago.

Villages

Pereje

First village found in the route that follows the A-road Nacional VI. In the past, it had a Hospital for the Pilgrims. Its patron Saint’s festivities are held on July 22nd (La Magdalena).

Trabadelo

The pilgrim starts here the climbing to El Cebreiro. Trabadelo has its patron Saint’s festivities on December 6th (San Nicolás de Bari), although January 28th and 29th are also festivities here (Santo Tirso and San Antonio Abad), respectively.

La Pórtela de Valcarce

La Pórtela de Valcarce is placed in the narrow valley Valle de Valcarce. Its population does not overcome 50 inhabitants and it is known that the original name of the village was Portella de Vallecarceris. The village was under the management of the monastery Monasterio de Carracedo.

Ambas Mestas

The name of Ambas Mestas is referred to the confluence here of the rivers Balboa and Valcarce.

Vega de Valcarce

It is the capital of the last municipality of the Province of León in the pilgrimage to Santiago. Its festivities are held on August 1st to honour Santa María de La Magdalena, patron Saint of fishers and penitents, and August 16th to honour San Roque.

Ruitelán

Its origin seems to be Roman and its former name was Uttaris. The parish church is devoted to San Juan Bautista and, according to Millón Bravo, the eremite of Lugo and later Bishop of León, San Froilán, lived in the lower slope of the mountain.

Las Herrerías

Las Herrerías or Las Ferrerías, as the village is known in the region, owes its name to the steel industry installed here until the beginning of the XXth Century. There was unless one steel foundry here. There are traces of the Hospital Inglés (a hospital for English pilgrims).

La Faba

It is the last but one village of the Province of León. Its festivities are held in honour of San Andrés.

La Laguna de Castilla

La Laguna de Castilla, at a height of 1.180 metres, shows as a prelude of the Alto del Cebreiro, which is just 1 km away.
