Rabanal del Camino - Ponferrada

Length: 32 Kilometres

The pilgrim will have to cover 32 km, the longest stage of the pilgrimage to Santiago while crossing the Province of León.

Rabanal del Camino - Ponferrada

The fountain Fuente de los Peregrinos is a bit more than 1 km away from Rabanal del Camino. After another 4 km we reach the ruins of Foncebadón –where there is a small rest area with a fountain-; 2 km away, in the highest part of the mountain pass (1.504 metres), the hermitage of Santiago –built in 1982- and the Cruz del Ferro –a monument dedicated to the pilgrims-. There is another fountain 80 metres on the left of the Cruz del Ferro.

To accomplish with the custom, backwards to the Cruz del Ferro, the traveller will take a stone and throw it expressing a wish that apparently becomes true.

The path descends during 2 km until Manjarín (1458 m.), an abandoned village where Tomás, a pilgrim settled here 5 years ago, offers accommodation and rings the bell when the pilgrims cross Manjarín. This ancient habit used to help the pilgrims avoid to get lost in the foggy days.

The way goes down, taking in turns the road and the path to El Acebo, that we cross through the road-path which divides the village in two. We come closer to Ponferrada, capital of El Bierzo, and we can feel it in the landscape and the houses, made of stone and slate.

On the way out of El Acebo, on the left of the road, there stands the Monument to the Pilgrim, erected in 1988 to honour a German pilgrim deceased in the Jubilee route.

A sharp descent takes us to Riego de Ambrós, and just over 5 km after, the pilgrim will arrive in Molinaseca, a well cared and monumental environment, prelude of the end of this stage. 8 km after Molinaseca we reach Ponferrada.

We enter the area Barrio de la Borreca. The streets Hospital, Salinas, Plaza del Temple and Comendador take us to the Square in which stands the Basílica de la Virgen de la Encina, patron Saint from El Bierzo.

Villages

Foncebadón

The general aspect of the village, with virtually ruined houses, shows an abandoned village, although there is one female inhabitant. The birth of the village is deeply related to the eremite Gaucelmo, who offered health care services and accommodation to the tired pilgrims that made the route during the XIth Century.

Manjarín

It is known that the town had a Hospital for the Pilgrims during the XVIth Century. The presence of ruined and abandoned houses shows that, certainly, Manjarín lived better days.

El Acebo

The pilgrim walks through the main street of the village, which divides it and plays at once the role of road, path for the pilgrims and meeting point for the few neighbours, who do not exceed from 20 people. On the way out, next to the Monument to the Pilgrim, the road descends towards Compludo, where a medieval blacksmith is still preserved.

Riego de Ambrós

This small village in León brings us closer to El Bierzo. The pilgrim can get a quick wash in its fountains, as well as visiting the parish church devoted to La Magdalena.

Molinaseca

In Molinaseca, the streets and the big houses with coat of arms and towers show an important town, which had up to four hospitals for the pilgrims. The sanctuary Santuario de Las Angustias -from the XVIII century-, the bridge over the river Meruelo and the church Iglesia de San Nicolás deserve to be visited.

Campo

We will find in Campo a parish church from the XVIIIth Century, devoted to San Blas.

Ponferrada

Ponferrada is the capital of the El Bierzo, a region from León, next to Galicia. The historians of the Jubilee tell that it is a town which was founded at the same time as the pilgrimage to Santiago. So, at the end of the XIth Century, the Bishop of Astorga, Osmundo, ordered to build a bridge over the river Sil and strengthened it with iron rails (pons férrote), which, afterwards, gave the name of the town. The Orden de los Templarios (Order of Knights Templar) left their mark on the Castle, which rises up next to the Baroque church of San Andrés, from the XVIIth Century.

Some other references of the city are the Hospital de la Reina – built under the order of the Queen Isabel La Católica, in 1498-, La Torre del Reloj (The Clock Tower) –from the XVI century, erected over an arch of the Middle Age city wall- and the Basílica de la Encina, declared in 1958 patron Saint of El Bierzo. The devotion on Her is based on the fact that the Virgin appeared in one of the oaks destined for being cut down in order to build the Castle of the Knights Templar.

Once in Ponferrada, it is customary to visit the Mozarabic church of Santiago de Peñalba, from the XIth Century, and the church of Santo Tomás de las Ollas, from the Xth Century, a bright and magnificent example of the Spanish Preromanic art.
